American Judeo-Christians will sometimes cite the words “In God We Trust” that is printed on federal property to justify their position; however this Judeo-Christian maxim is not the original motto of the United States. In fact, it did not appear until almost a hundred years after the founding of the nation—although, even then, it was only used on coinage. It did not become a nationally recognized maxim until 1956. The original national motto that was chosen by the Founding Fathers was actually E Pluribus Unum (One out of Many). Moreover, it does not say “In God We Trust” in the U.S. Constitution, but rather, “We the People”—which is a reference to a democracy, not a theocracy.

Judeo-Christians cite many examples of the Founding Fathers referring to God and the principles of the Judeo-Christian faith; however, while it is true that for the most part, the Founding Fathers of America did respect religious liberty and tradition, they were also students of Greek philosophy and Enlightenment thinking.

What the Founding Fathers of America established was not specifically a Judeo-Christian nation, but rather, a free and independent country that respected religious liberty. It was an expression of the humanistic principle that all people should have the right to practice their religious belief—or not to at all—and not be persecuted one way or the other.

THE LEGACY OF THE POWELL MEMO

In 1971, a corporate lawyer and future supreme court member, Lewis F. Powell, wrote a memorandum to the Director of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. The memo called for the increased role of the Chamber to effect public opinion through the means of "constant surveillance" and the monitoring of textbooks and media to guard against "criticism of the enterprise system." Powell also called for increased influence in the "radio and press" and a "more aggressive attitude" in order to "influence consumer decisions."

The Chamber heeded his advice and helped initiate a new movement that spawned the creation of more Republican think-tanks, as well as other powerful organizations that would serve to put more business friendly politicians in power.

SOME REASONS WHY OBAMA IS DOING A GOOD JOB

Obama is presently working on ending oil and gas subsidies. Oil companies are receiving $4 billion a year in taxpayer subsidies that don't make sense and that we can't afford. That's why President Obama has called on Democrats and Republicans in Congress to stop subsidizing the oil and gas industry so that we can afford to invest in the clean energy economy of tomorrow.

Stopping oil market fraud. Last week, Attorney General Eric Holder announced a working group focused on rooting out the cases of fraud in the oil markets that might affect gas prices (the President discussed this in his Weekly Address last Saturday).

Reducing our dependence on oil. Stepping back to look at the bigger picture, President Obama recently unveiled his Blueprint for a Secure Energy Future that set a goal of reducing our imports of foreign oil by a third in a little over a decade. To do this we have to increase our domestic energy production, reduce our demand for oil by building cleaner, more efficient vehicles, and fully utilize alternatives to oil in the transportation sector like natural gas and advanced biofuels.
